DJI drones and Remote ID: AeroScope, DroneID and standards RID
"Does it work with DJI?" is the most common Remote ID question. The short answer is yes for standards-compliant DJI aircraft — but DJI history includes two other things that get confused with it: the older DroneID telemetry and the AeroScope product. Here is how they differ.
Do DJI drones broadcast Remote ID?
Yes — DJI aircraft built to meet FAA and EU requirements broadcast standards-compliant Remote ID (ASTM F3411), the same open format any compliant drone uses. That means an ordinary Remote ID receiver can read a modern DJI drone's identity and position, just as it can any other brand's.
What is DJI DroneID?
DroneID is DJI's older, proprietary telemetry that rode on the OcuSync control link — a different protocol from standards Remote ID, predating the regulation. It is not the same as the ASTM F3411 broadcast a modern DJI drone sends for compliance, and a standards Remote ID receiver reads the latter, not the former.
In short: DroneID = DJI's own historical system; Remote ID = the open regulatory standard. Newer compliant DJI drones broadcast Remote ID.
What is DJI AeroScope?
AeroScope was DJI's own detection product that read DJI's proprietary transmissions — a receiver for the DJI ecosystem rather than the open standard. Standards Remote ID reception, by contrast, works across brands and needs no vendor-specific hardware, because the broadcast format is published and shared.
How do you detect a DJI drone?
For a compliant modern DJI drone, use any Remote ID receiver that covers WiFi and Bluetooth: it decodes the ASTM F3411 broadcast the same way it would a Parrot, Autel or Holy Stone drone. No DJI-specific device is required, because the drone is using the open standard, not a DJI-only protocol.
