Can you detect drones with just a phone?
Partly — and understanding which part is the whole story. A phone can pick up Bluetooth Remote ID, but most phones cannot capture WiFi Remote ID at all. Here is exactly where a phone's radios stop, and what a small dedicated receiver adds.
Can a phone alone detect Remote ID?
Some of it. A phone with the right app can receive Bluetooth Remote ID — Legacy, and Long Range if the chipset supports it. What it usually can't do is capture WiFi Remote ID, so any drone broadcasting over WiFi tends to be invisible to a phone-only setup.
Why does a phone miss WiFi Remote ID?
Because WiFi Beacon Remote ID requires the WiFi chip to run in monitor (promiscuous) mode, and consumer phones lock their WiFi chips out of that mode. Without it, the phone can't read the raw Beacon frames the drone sprays into the air — so the drone simply never appears. Phones also generally can't reach the 5 GHz channels some drones use.
What does a dedicated receiver add?
It does the WiFi capture the phone can't, and relays a combined feed. A dedicated receiver runs its own WiFi radio in monitor mode, scans Bluetooth (both PHYs), decodes everything, and streams the merged, de-duplicated result to your phone — so the phone shows every drone, not just the Bluetooth ones.
