How to detect drones near you
If a drone is flying over your home, business or event and you want to know what it is and who is flying it, Remote ID is the tool. Most compliant drones announce themselves continuously — you just need something to listen. Here is the practical setup.
How do you detect a drone near you?
Use a Remote ID receiver: a passive radio that listens on 2.4 GHz (and ideally 5 GHz) for the WiFi and Bluetooth broadcasts compliant drones send, decodes them, and shows each aircraft with its live position — and often the operator's location — on a map. It transmits nothing, so the drone and pilot never know you're watching.
What do you need?
A receiver that covers both WiFi and Bluetooth, and a phone to display the feed. That's it — no internet, no subscription, no permission from anyone. The receiver does the hard part (WiFi monitor-mode capture the phone can't), and relays the result.

Where should the receiver go?
As high and clear as practical, with a view of the sky the drones fly in — a windowsill facing the area, a balcony, a car dash, or a small mast. Keep it away from large metal and thick walls. Placement affects range more than any spec on the box.
What can you actually see?
For each broadcasting drone: its ID (serial or registration), live GPS position, altitude and speed, its track over time, and — when the drone sends it — the operator or take-off location, so you can see roughly where the pilot is standing. Multiple drones show at once, each as its own entry.

What won't it detect?
Anything not broadcasting Remote ID: home-built drones, aircraft with Remote ID disabled or removed, very light drones below the threshold, or a drone using a transport or band your receiver doesn't cover. Frequently asked questions
Can I detect a drone with just my phone?
Partly. A phone usually receives Bluetooth Remote ID but misses WiFi, because it can't put its WiFi chip into monitor mode. A dedicated receiver captures the WiFi traffic and relays it — see phone vs a dedicated receiver.
Will the drone operator know I'm detecting them?
No. Reception is entirely passive: your receiver only listens and never transmits to the aircraft, so there is nothing for the operator to notice.
Do I need an internet connection?
No. Broadcast Remote ID is a direct radio transmission from the drone, so detection works fully offline.
