How to find the drone operator with Remote ID
One of Remote ID's most useful — and most misunderstood — features is that it can reveal the operator or take-off location: roughly where the pilot is standing. Here is how that works, how accurate it is, and where it stops.
Can you see where the pilot is?
Often, yes. When a drone broadcasts its System message, Remote ID includes the operator or take-off location — so a receiver can show roughly where the aircraft is being flown from, not just where the drone itself is. Not every drone populates this field, but many do.
How does Remote ID carry the operator location?
Through the System message, one of the ASTM F3411 message types. It carries the ground control station's position — the operator location on a live-GNSS system, or the take-off point on others — separately from the drone's own live position, so a receiver can plot both.
How accurate is it?
It's a GNSS position, so at its best it's within a handful of metres, and in practice good enough to point you at "that field", "that rooftop" or "that car park". Treat it as an area, not a pin-drop on a person: it tells you where the controller is, which is usually where the pilot is standing.
When is the operator location missing?
When the drone doesn't send a System message, hasn't got a GNSS fix for the control station, or uses a broadcast module that only reports the take-off point rather than a live operator position. In those cases you'll see the drone but not its pilot. It's an "often", not an "always".
A receiver that reliably captures the System message is what turns "there's a drone" into "there's a drone, and it launched from over there." Can I see exactly where the drone pilot is standing?

Is the operator location the same as the drone's location?
No — they're separate fields. The Location message gives the drone's live position; the System message gives the operator or take-off point. A good receiver shows both distinctly.
Why does a drone show no operator location?
Because it hasn't sent a System message, lacks a control-station GNSS fix, or is a broadcast module that reports only the take-off point. You'll still see the drone itself.
