FAA Remote ID rules explained

In the United States, the FAA's Remote ID rule (14 CFR Part 89) requires most registered drones to broadcast their identity and location while flying. Here is who it affects, the three ways to comply, what actually goes out over the air, and whether you're allowed to receive it. General information, not legal advice.

What does the FAA Remote ID rule require?

That an affected drone broadcast, in real time over radio, its identity, its location and altitude, the location and altitude of its control station (the operator/take-off point), a timestamp, and an emergency status. The goal is that anyone nearby — including the FAA and law enforcement — can identify a drone and see where it is being flown from.

Who has to comply?

Broadly, drones that must be registered with the FAA: aircraft over 250 g flown recreationally, and effectively all drones flown under Part 107 regardless of weight. Sub-250 g drones flown purely recreationally are generally exempt from registration and therefore from Remote ID.

Exact applicability depends on weight, how the drone is used, and registration status, and the rules evolve — always check the current FAA guidance for your situation.

The three ways to comply

There are exactly three: fly a Standard Remote ID drone that broadcasts natively; attach a Remote ID broadcast module to an older drone; or fly within an FRIA (FAA-Recognized Identification Area) where Remote ID is not required.

What does the broadcast contain?

The drone's ID, its live position and altitude, the control-station (operator) position and altitude, a timestamp, and emergency status. A broadcast module version omits some fields a built-in system has, but still sends identity plus drone and take-off location.

Broadcast only — no network requirement

The FAA's final rule dropped the originally proposed network Remote ID requirement, leaving broadcast Remote ID as the US mandate. That is why a local receiver is all you need to see US Remote ID: it is transmitted directly over radio, not to an internet service.

Is it legal to receive Remote ID?

Receiving is generally lawful because the broadcasts are unencrypted and intended to be publicly readable — that is the stated point of the rule. A passive receiver transmits nothing and does not interfere with the aircraft. What you do with collected data can still be regulated, and this is general information, not legal advice.

For the person who wants to see the drones in their own airspace, that is the practical upshot: the mandate exists to make drones identifiable, and a passive receiver such as D.A.R.S. simply reads the broadcast the rule requires — showing the aircraft, its track, and where it took off from, on your phone, with nothing transmitted back.

Frequently asked questions

Do sub-250 g drones need Remote ID in the US?

Generally not when flown purely recreationally, because they usually don't require registration. Flown under Part 107 (commercial), the same drone typically does need to comply. Weight alone isn't the whole test — use is what tips it.

What is a FRIA?

An FAA-Recognized Identification Area: a geographic zone, often a recognised model-aircraft field, where drones may fly without broadcasting Remote ID, provided they stay within visual line of sight. It is the third compliance path for aircraft that don't broadcast.

Can I be identified as the receiver?

No. Reception is passive — the receiver only listens and never transmits to the aircraft, so there is nothing for the operator or anyone else to detect.
